Founded in 1882 as the Portland Society of Art, the Portland Museum of Art (PMA) is the largest art institution in the State of Maine. The Museum is comprised of two historic homes and the Payson Building which was designed by Henry Cobb of Pei Cobb Fried & Partners.

In 2022, in support of their Campus Expansion and Unification Plan, the PMA launched an international design competition to solicit concept designs to “Build a Landmark for the Future”. After thorough deliberation and community feedback, LEVER Architecture was selected to lead the design for the Campus Expansion and Unification project.

In 2023, UPC was selected as owner’s representative to lead the interdisciplinary team in support of this project, which will serve as a model for sustainability in museum construction.
